'if I ever write another word it'll be too soon / if I ever write
another line it'll be too soon / I can see the words they're forcing behind my
eyelids / I hate to think of her but I sort of love it in a strange way yeah'.
So speaks Rick's 'Desperation', as desperate as you'd think.
Rick's voice is a little behind the music, but the music there is pretty
fine.
Title track 'Exit 21' which doesn't come in until track 6 is a soft,
acoustic piece about an accident. Odd. Listen - 'I see the sign on the road up
ahead - barely / barely knew what to do / she was screaming something at me -
fairly / fairly loud it crashed through / I felt a fire and a weight on my
side - and my / and my eyes spin around / she was lying face on the ground -
with glass / glass and chrome all around'. They don't find love, they weren't
long lost lovers, it's a car crash! I like these non-love ones; they're
different. Oh, and the beat does come on louder, along with moaning voices in
the back. Interesting.
This is rock, and it's all-purpose fun. Pleasant enough to keep the
Brittany Spears girls glued in, but biting enough to alternate the alternative
crowd at the live sets. It's also a cd that was eligible for 9 categories in
the 42nd Annual Grammies. Pretty good hype. Though just by giving a listen,
you'll see that Rick needs little of that. He is in control, writing great
music, giving you 13 great tracks. Lucky you!
