ARTVOICE Page 34 September 30 - October 6 Indie Internet Star with Buffalo Roots Plays Nietzsche's He may be busy surfing a digital wave of fame on the internet, but Buffalo-area native Rick Denzien will touch down at Nietzsche's next week to perform tracks off his March '99 release Exit 21. The former Springville, NY resident and self-proclaimed "denizen" of a higher level of rock "n" roll broke records over the summer when he became the first Philly artist to occupy top spots on the mpulse.com alternative rock charts. Exit 21 is the cross-over rocker's third release. Backed by Geffen Records drummer Ronnie Crawford and bassist Mike Gregos, Denzien delivers an electric / acoustic timbre with an evocative lyrical social conscious. His hit song "Desperation" fuses sporadic assaults on civilization with a dewy love narrative. In a tone somewhat resembling an angry Richard Marx, he sings "I hate to think of her but I sort of love it in a strange way yeah.....What kind of fool am I thinking there's music on M-TV? / At least we live in a place with no public executions / unless you move or koresh your way to oblivion yeah." The tune culminates in its angst-ridden refrain: "Yeah eh Yeah eh Yeah." Denzien's global internet success is a testament of the singer-songwriter's boundless charm. Exit 21 confronts the all-too-often-ignored discontent of adolescents world-wide. Though it's most popular among younger listeners, Denzien's style also appeals in the more mature, discriminating crowds. "The truth on the road is, you never know what's around the next bend," he says, "With music, you can be a real ambassador for the things that you can't see." Rick Denzien is slated to play a 9:00 PM show on Thursday, Oct. 7 at Nietzsche's - sophia maines |
