The singer / songwriter gig has to be a tough one; it's a vague non-category that doesn't always really let the listener know what an artist is all about. Is it folk? Is it rock? Is it pop? Is it political? Is it spiritual? The answer , usually, is yes to all-in varying degrees. In Rick Denzien's case, he certainly touches on all of these categories. Exit 21 is a sharp collection of largely guitar-bass-drum tunes, each with a message, each with a hook. Shades of folk, country and blues color things a bit, and the album pops into rock now and again. Lyrically, Exit 21 leans toward the political, blending optimism with social commentary, interspersing spirituality with practicality. While the occasional lyric becomes a bit dogmatic, Denzien generally has a knack for keeping the messages loose and open to interpretation. High points here include the murky Father Love; the gritty Her Calling, with its lush harmonies and sharpened hook, and It Never Ends, with its lovely harmonies, but there isn't a dog on the disc. The production is light-handed and clean, allowing Denzien's slightly raspy growl and delicate guitar work to shine. The overall tone of the disc if very warm and inviting. The songs build and draw you in; the hooks captivate; the vocal harmonies reflect the thoughtful nature of the lyrics. Exit 21 was created with care; Denzien's songs and playing come from the heart and mean a great deal to him, and this is conveyed to the listener through Denzien's earnest delivery. There is a earthy realness to Exit 21 that makes it immediately familiar, equally suited to a variety of settings; a coffee shop, a long drive, a quiet evening at home. interested but can't find Exit 21 locally?
