OWNER'S MANUAL / GUIDE - part 2 The Parat Plus(tm) may save your life, be familiar with it before you need it.
D. Child Harness Small children, under 50 lbs. can be placed in their own harness which attaches directly to the "D" ring where the main harness is attached. By using this harness you keep your hands relatively free during a descent and is an added safety measure. CH - Parat Plus (tm) Child Harness $19.95 E. National Fire Protection Association brochure on what to do in a fire. Hart International, Inc. recommends most of their instructions highly. The Parat Plus (tm) should only be used when you have no other ready means of escape. What precautions are vital to you? Be sure you always carry the Parat Plus (tm) travel bag with you, particularly when you are going to stay in high buildings. Disaster could strike at any time so be prepared. Examine these instructions regularly in order to be sure that you acquaint yourself with them so much, that in case of any emergency you do the right thing. Read them again from time to time to make sure you don't forget anything. Important Safety Tip: Always count and memorize the number of doors from the recommended fire exit to your room door. The reason is simple, and it could save your life. In heavy smoke you could "feel" your way to the fire exit by counting the doors in the hallway as you go by them. This way you always have a reference, because you may not be able to see. Studies indicate that in smoke conditions men and women will only walk a few feet and then turn around and retreat. Approximately 20 feet for men and 15 feet for women. The problem is that the exit could be just a few more feet ahead and you may be lost because normally you would turn back. You are more likely to turn back if there are other persons with you. You must know: How many doors there are between my room and the fire exit door? A. Do not stay in a building over the length of the Parat Plus (tm) unit you have purchased. For example: don't stay over 40 meter./ 131 feet tall (approximately 10 - 14 stories, if you have the Parat Plus (tm) model 12T). B. Read the NFPA brochure instructions . Know your normal exits and learn not to burn. (a registered trademark of the NFPA) C. Do not place the Parat Plus (tm) life-line over a sharp edge. This is your life-line, protect it. Although it is very strong, like any rope, it is not indestructible. Take the blankets off the bed, pillow, towels or clothing and place them over the top of a sharp edge such as the window edge or broken glass, before you place the life-line on it. Protecting the life-line will also protect yourself. If the window ledge has broken glass or sharp edges you can minimize the very real possibility that you will obtain cuts or abrasions as a result of climbing over the edge. D. Take the same care of the Life-Line if you must bend around a corner. Do not run over an unprotected corner. See above E. Do not touch the friction block during descent. It will be hot - do not touch it. F. Anchor only to objects which are stationary and which can carry many times your weight. Get in the habit of looking for possible anchor points. Protect your hands with a towel or gloves before testing anchor points yourself. We have found: steel door frames with steel hinges (the door to the bathroom) to be very strong and are available in many hotels. Check to see if the hinge has the hinge pin and all screws intact, before using as an anchor point. In this case hook the tie down life-line around the hinge with the looped ends into the room. Connect your hook to both loops on the tie down life-line and even up both sides of the life-line with the hook, then close the door and hook up the Parat Plus (tm) . Heavy anchored pipes which run through walls could be used to anchor to. In some drop ceilings you can push the tiles aside to find heavy steel beams which can be hooked to. Never hook to a drop ceiling or a leg of furniture or what we call an "open ended" object because the tie down life-line will slip off an open end. F. Never exceed the weight limit on the unit you have. The Parat Plus (tm) is designed as a personal rescue device, and should be used by only one person. Additional units should be purchased to protect traveling companions or others who would occupy a room with you. Small children under 50 lbs. which you would place in the harness accessory, is the only possible exception to this rule, still do not to exceed the recommended rating. G. Make sure your Parat Plus (tm) stays in perfect condition. It's construction is very tough, but when you put luggage on an airline or other carrier it is out of your personal control and it could become damaged. When traveling with luggage, pack the Parat Plus (tm) case in the center of your bag so that it will be surrounded by the contents: clothing, etc. This should give the extra protection to your Parat Plus (tm) and prevent any damage which could occur. We recommend that you send it in every three years for a service check to the address on this brochure. Return it to the same address if any damage has occurred. If your unit has been damaged by shipping your remedy remains with the carrier, if you damage the unit we will replace or fix it at our option for cost. We invite you to send your Parat Plus (tm) to us every three (3) years for a safety check up. The cost is $19.95 postage pre-paid. What to do in an emergency? If an Emergency Occurs The Following Steps Must Be Taken. Act quickly, but the most important thing is to remain calm. 1. Think. Inform the Fire Department, Front Desk, Receptionist or Porter of the condition and your exact location, you may be the only person who knows. Do not let yourself be instructed by other hotel guests in a fire situation. Studies indicate that the person who may look like an authority is most often not. In the fire situation, therefore, you must know what to do for yourself. Do not believe what you see on television, you may be completely out of danger. Broadcasts may be delayed. Persons were killed in the MGM Grand Hotel fire because of this very reason. After the fire was out, people were watching a television broadcast of the earlier disaster at their hotel. Seeing the graphic pictures on the news update on TV, some people thought that they were in danger and started climb out windows. Persons often enter into risk situations and death by believing the wrong news. Remember that for most people the "normal" behavior in a fire is to do the wrong thing. So... know what you are going to do, and think for yourself. 2. Feel your door before you open it. If it is hot or warm do not open it. Leave your belongings in your room but take your room key(s) . Why? Because you must be able to re-enter your room if all other exits are blocked. Almost all hotel rooms are locked from the outside. You must take your room key(s) in case you must get back in to your room. 3. Use your smoke mask. Bend low even if you can't see smoke, crouch very low or crawl in heavy smoke. When you are in a public building if you crawl you may be trampled by other persons who are trying to escape, but this is where the cleanest air will be. Do stay as low as possible, even if you can't see smoke. (swimmers goggles are perfect for eye smoke protection) Stay close to the wall using the door counting system. Hold your breath and close your eyes when ever possible. Breath through clothing or a hand cloth to filter some of the smoke. Leave the building as quickly as possible by the normal route or the emergency Parat Plus (tm) stairs. Avoid the elevators. Don't worry about your belongings, leave them behind, but be sure to take your room keys with you. Always close doors. This way you will place a barrier between you and the smoke or flames. 4. Are the escape routes blocked by heavy smoke, fire or for other reasons? Return immediately to your room (with your traveling companion), if necessary by using the door counting system described above. Close your door. Seal off cracks around doors and vents with bath towels, cloth or rug. Soak them in water if it is nearby. Shut off fans and air conditioners. If all persons in your party are accounted for, do not open the door for strangers. On the surface this may sound extremely cruel and inhumane, however, it is your life you are trying to protect. You now know about human behavior in fires. If it were known by other persons in the building that you were the only one with an available Parat Plus (tm) .... you could just imagine the possible ill results. 5. Signal at the window with your light stick, even if authorities are already aware of your location. Try to be calm. Rescue may be moments away. But you also must prepare yourself for an emergency Parat Plus (tm) . 6. Now is the time to hook up your Parat Plus (tm) which is to be used only in these extreme emergencies. Prepare to Parat Plus (tm) Follow your instructions carefully. 7. Look out your window to see if there is a blaze below you. If there is, do not exit with the Parat Plus (tm) via that location, try to signal the fire department or find another possible exit location. 8. Break open the plastic seal bag , unfold the harness, find the carabiner and prepare to hook up the device. Fix the safety hook / carabiner, around a stationary anchor point and back to the life-line so that it is secure. Or if you own an anchor cable, wrap the cable around a fixed object and fix both open loops of the anchor life-line to the carabiner. Make sure it is anchored properly. Check again to make sure the object you anchor to will carry your weight. 9. Step in to the harness and pull it up under your arms or put the harness over your head and under your arms, then adjust the sliding buckle so that you are locked in the harness snugly. The body strap should be between your legs and hooked to the "D" ring in front of you. When adjusted properly, the harness should fit under your arms with the adjustment buckle in front of you, upon your chest just above your breasts and on the back across your shoulder blades. 10. Open the window and prepare the edges so you can protect yourself and your life-line while you Parat Plus (tm). If rescue is seconds away, wait for the rescue workers, but if they are unable to reach you and the danger is an immediate threat and will do you personal harm, then you must descend by using the Parat Plus (tm) device. 11. Make one last check to make triple sure you have a) anchored properly, b) that you are in the harness securely, c) that you are still in immediate danger and in your own judgement the fire department will not reach you in time. 12. Move towards the window , the life-line will come out of the Parat Plus (tm) friction block as you move away from the anchor point. The friction block and harness comes with you - the life-line stays up in the room. (it works opposite what you would normally think) Is the window edge sharp? Cover it with blankets or clothing. Slowly climb on to the window ledge and sit like you would straddle a bicycle or a horse, one leg in and one leg out of the window. DO NOT JUMP! This could shock load the life-line and you do not want that. This may be difficult to imagine, however, this is one suggested way to get out of a window it has worked for us many times. Lower yourself over the edge. Hold on to the window frame, then while still sitting on the edge, move your inside leg to the outside. You should end up in a sitting position on the window edge, have both legs facing out. Keep holding on to the window frame to steady yourself. Move to your right or left so that you are also close to one side of the window frame. Be able to twist your upper body so that you are facing inward. Hold on to the window edges and then as gracefully as possible, and carefully, maneuver yourself in such a way that you roll belly down on the window ledge, feet out of the window, your upper torso facing into the room, all the while remain holding on to the ledge and slowly lower yourself over the ledge, keep the padding under the life-line, pull the Parat Plus (tm) friction block over the edge with you, let go of the window ledge only after you have the Parat Plus (tm) friction block over the edge with you and hold on to the life-line which feeds the friction block. Walk down the building. Consult the picture-graphic instructions in your travel case for more on this. 13. Do not touch the Parat Plus (tm) friction block; it could influence the functioning of the device. Also since the unit will be in use the friction required to slow you to walking speed generates high temperatures on the steel pulley. It will be hot - do not touch it, just hold on to the feed side of the life-line. You will descend automatically about 1.9 feet per second, or walking speed. Simply walk down the side of the building. You will be facing the building's outer wall, you will have a very limited perception of height. Use your feet to keep clear from the wall and obstructions, be careful around the windows or balconies under you. You can move from side to side (to avoid windows) by walking in the direction you wish to go. If you must stop or slow down for some reason, all you need to do is hold on to the feed side of the life-line and you will stop. To resume your descent just release your grip and let the life-line slide through your fingers & you will continue. Caution: keep your hand on the feed side of the life-line in order to prevent any knot or twist from going to the friction block. This would stop the unit. What can the Parat Plus (tm) do for you? If you closely follow the instructions, there is no need to be afraid and your descent will be perfect. Your speed of descent is slow and reliable, approximately 90 feet per minute. Walking speed. When used properly it will prevent you from falling to the ground in these emergency situations. It is not natural to go out of a high building, but your equipment is made of high quality materials, has passed rigid testing labs internationally and is designed for non-trained persons to Parat Plus (tm) from high places. CAUTION: The equipment is rated for use by persons who weight between 50 and 300 lbs., do not exceed this. Whenever a Parat Plus (tm) saved your life, you will receive a new one, FREE OF CHARGE . Please have the fire department or police department send us a letter stating how you saved your life, send the old Parat Plus (tm) friction-block to us postage paid and we will send you a new one free . If the Parat Plus (tm) is used in training, the life-line must be replaced after 5 descents in order to maintain as wide a safety factor as possible. return to Owner's Manual page 1
